Maruyama Printed Dishcloth – The Great Wave by Hokusai

A small piece of Japanese art for the everyday kitchen, the Maruyama Printed Dishcloth - The Great Wave by Hokusai combines Maruyama’s traditional Nara textile craftsmanship with one of the most celebrated images in Japanese art.

The cloth features Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created in the early 1830s as part of his renowned Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series. With its dramatic curling wave, distant Mount Fuji and tiny boats caught between them, the composition has become an enduring symbol of Japanese visual culture and one of the world’s most recognisable works of ukiyo-e.

Made in Nara, Japan, the dishcloth uses Maruyama’s characteristic kaya construction, inspired by the loosely woven fabric traditionally used for Japanese mosquito netting. Highly absorbent, breathable and quick-drying, the cloth begins with a slightly crisp handle and becomes beautifully soft and supple with repeated washing and use.

Practical enough for daily cleaning yet beautiful enough to leave on display, it is ideal for wiping kitchen surfaces, drying dishes and glassware or simply adding a subtle expression of Japanese art to the home.

Care: Wash before first use to remove the starch used during production and reveal the softness and absorbency of the fabric. Hand or machine wash using a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener. Reshape and air dry naturally. Some shrinkage and softening with repeated washing are natural characteristics of the textile.

About The Great Wave

Created by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) during Japan’s Edo period, The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a woodblock print from the artist’s celebrated Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series.

The monumental wave dominates the composition while the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji appears quietly in the distance. Hokusai’s extraordinary use of movement, perspective and colour transformed a fleeting encounter with nature into an image that has transcended its time and place.
