Beautifully understated and exceptionally practical, the Maruyama Natural Tea Towel – Binchotan Charcoal combines generations of Japanese textile craftsmanship with the natural qualities of traditional binchotan charcoal.

Woven in Maruyama’s distinctive layered kaya fabric, developed from the open weave traditionally used for Japanese mosquito netting, the towel is highly absorbent, breathable and quick-drying. Initially crisp, the fabric becomes wonderfully soft and supple with washing and continued use, while retaining its remarkable durability.

Finely processed binchotan charcoal is incorporated into the fibres, giving the towel natural deodorising properties particularly well suited to the kitchen. Binchotan, often known as Japanese white charcoal, has been produced in Japan for centuries and is prized for its natural purifying and odour-neutralising qualities.

At 35 × 70 cm, its generous proportions make it ideal for drying dishes and delicate glassware, handling larger cookware, drying hands or keeping beside the sink. Its deep charcoal tone and beautifully textured weave bring a quiet Japanese elegance to this hardworking everyday essential.

Size: 35 × 70 cm
Material: 30% Rayon and 70% cotton layered kaya fabric
Colour: Binchotan Charcoal
Made in: Nara, Japan

Care: Wash before first use to remove the starch used during production and reveal the characteristic softness and absorbency of the fabric. Hand or machine wash using a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener. Rinse thoroughly, reshape and air dry. Do not tumble dry. Some shrinkage after washing is a natural characteristic of the fabric.

About Maruyama

Founded in Nara, Japan, in 1930, Maruyama Fiber Industry has its roots in the manufacture of traditional Japanese kaya mosquito-net fabric. As Japanese lifestyles evolved, Maruyama applied its specialist weaving knowledge to a new generation of household textiles, preserving a traditional Nara craft while giving it a contemporary purpose.

Today, through its Nawrap collection, Maruyama continues to create thoughtfully designed textiles distinguished by their absorbency, breathability, durability and extraordinary softness with use. It is a distinctly Japanese approach to the everyday: taking a humble, functional object and making it exceptionally well.
