Maruyama Natural Dishcloth – Binchotan Charcoal

A beautifully considered everyday object from Nara, Japan, the Maruyama Natural Dishcloth in Binchotan Charcoal brings together traditional Japanese textile craftsmanship and the remarkable natural properties of binchotan charcoal.

Woven in six layers, the cloth is exceptionally absorbent, breathable and quick-drying, while becoming softer and more supple with repeated use. The charcoal version incorporates binchotan, Japan’s highly prized white charcoal, into the fibres of the cloth. Traditionally valued for its natural purification properties, binchotan helps to naturally neutralise and absorb unwanted odours - particularly useful for a kitchen cloth that is frequently exposed to moisture.

The open, layered weave is derived from the fabric traditionally used for Japanese kaya, or mosquito netting. Its textured construction provides effective yet gentle cleaning for dishes, glassware, cookware and kitchen surfaces, while allowing air to circulate freely through the cloth so that it dries quickly between uses.

Made without dyes or chemicals during production, the Natural Charcoal Dishcloth is an understated and highly functional alternative to conventional synthetic kitchen cloths.

Care: Wash before first use to remove the natural starch coating applied during production and to soften the fibres. Machine or hand wash with a mild detergent. Do not use bleach and do not tumble dry. Rinse thoroughly after use, wring gently and allow to air dry. Some shrinkage after washing is natural.
