Maruyama Printed Japanese Dishcloth – Red Fuji by Hokusai

A beautiful meeting of Japanese art and everyday craftsmanship, the Maruyama Printed Japanese Dishcloth - Red Fuji by Hokusai brings one of Japan’s most celebrated landscapes to a simple and beautifully functional household textile.

The design features Katsushika Hokusai’s Fine Wind, Clear Morning, more commonly known as Red Fuji (Gaifū Kaisei). Created in the early 1830s, the woodblock print forms part of Hokusai’s celebrated Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series.

In the composition, Mount Fuji rises almost monumentally against a clear blue sky, its slopes transformed into a rich reddish tone by the early morning light. With its extraordinary simplicity, bold colour and sense of stillness, Red Fuji has become one of Hokusai’s most recognisable works and an enduring image of the Japanese landscape.

Made in Nara, Japan, the dishcloth uses Maruyama’s characteristic kaya construction, inspired by the loosely woven fabric traditionally used for Japanese mosquito netting. Highly absorbent, breathable and quick-drying, the cloth begins with a slightly crisp texture and becomes wonderfully soft and supple through repeated washing and use.

Practical enough for everyday cleaning yet beautiful enough to leave on display, it is ideal for drying dishes and glassware, wiping kitchen surfaces or introducing a small piece of Japanese art into the home.

Care: Wash before first use to remove the starch used during production and reveal the characteristic softness and absorbency of the fabric. Hand or machine wash using a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener. Reshape and air dry naturally. Some shrinkage and softening with repeated washing are natural characteristics of the textile.

About Red Fuji

Fine Wind, Clear Morning, popularly known as Red Fuji, was created by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) during the Edo period and belongs to his landmark series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.

The print captures a rare atmospheric moment when the rising sun casts a warm reddish light across Mount Fuji. Hokusai strips the landscape back to its essential elements - mountain, sky and clouds - creating an image of remarkable balance and graphic strength.

Mount Fuji held profound cultural and spiritual significance in Japan, and Hokusai returned to it repeatedly throughout his career. In Red Fuji, the mountain itself becomes the undisputed subject: monumental, serene and timeless.

About Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was one of the great masters of Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking. Over a remarkably long and prolific career, he produced landscapes, illustrations, studies of nature and scenes of everyday life that helped redefine Japanese visual culture.

His Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series includes both Red Fuji and the internationally celebrated Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai’s innovative compositions, confident line and extraordinary observation of the natural world would later have a profound influence on artists far beyond Japan.
