Experience the soft, serene glow of Daiyo Rice Bran Wax Candles, lovingly handcrafted in Japan using traditional Warosoku methods that have been passed down for over a century. Made from natural rice bran wax, these candles burn with a bright, steady flame and produce minimal smoke, making them perfect for meditative spaces, dining tables, or quiet evenings at home.
The cylindrical shape and delicate texture are designed for a clean, even burn, while the natural rice bran wax offers a subtle, almost scent-free experience – ideal for those who prefer a pure, calm atmosphere.
The wax harvested from sumac trees, called HAZE, originally came from Ryukyu (Okinawa) in the Edo period (1603 - 1868). HAZE trees are found, particularly in western Japan, and have been bred to be suitable for candle-making.
Packaged in an illustrated box featuring a cat and a mouse. Japanese candles are made of natural wax only, such as rice bran wax, as in this series, allowing mice to feed on them. Japanese candle makers traditionally keep cats as guardians to repel the mice. By extension, a candle shop with cats is a testament to using natural ingredients.

About Daiyo:
Daiyo was established in the Takashima county of Shiga Prefecture in 1914. The artisanship has been passed down across four generations, polished and refined as time passes. Shiga prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, and an abundance of natural resources. Consequently, Shiga has accumulated a wealth of knowledge on the coexistence of man and nature. Daiyo’s Japanese candles are 100% made from natural plant wax. Their principles of making candles from the blessings of nature have remained unchanged since establishment more than a century ago.
In prayer, in conversation, in self reflection, the candle subtly changes its expression in response, in feather like gentleness and ethereal warmth. The flame emanates an emotion not possible with electrical lights in our daily lives. “From Monologue to dialogue” is a principle theme at Daiyo, as they constantly contemplate the innate powers of the light of a candle flame, and how human relations are derived and created from it. They will continue making candles of the highest quality in order to pass down the closely-knit relationship between flame and humans that they have weaved since generations ago.
Care Instructions:
- Always place candles upright on a heatproof surface or candle stand.
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before lighting for an even burn.
- Keep candles away from drafts to maintain a steady flame.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Extinguish by snuffing out the flame (avoid blowing to reduce smoke).
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent softening.
