The TOHAKU collection is a special line of candles paying homage to the paintings of Tohaku Hasegawa, one of the most famous painters in Japan. Inspired by the forests of his childhood, Tohaku's work highlighted the pine trees and forests surrounding his childhood home. The flame is meant to represent an extension of the gentle lines of these trees, reminding you of a rustic simplicity. 

Each candle is hand-rolled using the time-honored tegake technique — applying pure sumac (haze) wax layer by layer around a hollow washi-and-rush wick. The result is a clean, stable flame that burns with a warm intensity and minimal soot. The accompanying Koma stand, crafted from cast iron in the traditional style, provides a stable, elegant base that catches any melted wax and encourages a safe, steady burn.

Care Instructions:

• Lighting: For best results, light the candle horizontally for the first few moments, then place upright in a non-flammable holder. 
• Extinguishing: Avoid blowing out hard—use a gentle breath, or ideally a snuffer, to prevent wax splatter and soot. 
• Wick maintenance: If the wick grows long or curled, trim it down (to around 1 cm) using tweezers or a wick trimmer to maintain a clean burn. 
• Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place. Sumac wax is sensitive to heat and humidity, which can soften the candle. 
• Residue notes: Over time, you might notice a fine white “bloom” or powder on the wax surface — this is a normal characteristic of sumac wax, not a defect.
