While honouring the time-honoured chopstick-making traditions of Obama City in Fukui Prefecture - including the historic techniques of Wakasa-nuri and Raden - Kawai reimagines their form for contemporary living, creating pieces that resonate with modern values and lifestyles.
“HAJIME,” Kawai’s flagship line, marks a thoughtful step forward beyond the 400-year legacy of Wakasa lacquerware. The name derives from the kanji - (ichi), meaning “one,” symbolising a continuous journey - from the origin of the material to its place at the dining table. A single piece of wood is shaped, refined, and passed through skilled hands, ultimately becoming a pair of chopsticks. In this spirit, HAJIME represents both continuity and renewal - a new beginning for a centuries-old craft.

Care: Hand washing is recommended for both the rests and dipping bowls.
