Kobataen Matcha Green Tea – The Pinnacle of Japanese Tea Craftsmanship

Founded in the mid-Edo period in Ujitawara, Kyoto—the birthplace of Japanese green tea—Kobataen Co., Ltd. has upheld a rich tradition of tea cultivation and craftsmanship for over 400 years. Uji-Cha's superior craftsmanship, including traditional shading techniques, ensures its unmatched quality and tradition. In contrast, most regular matcha, grown in various other regions, often lacks Uji-Cha's depth, with colour, texture, and quality variations.

Kobataen's matcha is a ceremonial-grade powdered green tea made from tencha leaves, which are shaded to enhance their umami flavor; increasing sweetness and reducing any bitterness. The cultivation process involves covering the tea plants to block sunlight, a technique that increases chlorophyll production and amino acids, resulting in a rich, sweet taste. After harvesting, the leaves are steamed to prevent oxidation, dried without rolling, and ground into a fine powder using traditional stone mills, preserving their delicate flavors and nutrients.

Kobataen Co., Ltd. – A Legacy of Excellence in Japanese Green Tea

Established as a tea farm by Heiemon Morita, the company began producing and distributing premium green tea, earning recognition at various exhibitions, including the 1st Tea Manufacturing Competitive Exhibition in 1879 and the Kyoto Tea Fair in 1886. Incorporated in 1962, Kobataen continues to be a symbol of quality and innovation in the Japanese tea industry.

Usage Guidelines

To prepare a traditional cup of matcha:

  1. Sift 1–2 grams (approximately 1–2 chashaku scoops) of matcha powder into a chawan/bowl.

  2. Add 70–80 ml of hot water heated to around 70–80°C.

  3. Whisk briskly with a chasen in a W-shaped motion until a frothy layer forms.

  4. Enjoy immediately for the freshest taste.

Care: Store in a cool dark place and consume as soon as possible. Sealed for freshness.
