The Daiyo Sumac White Candles No. 3 are a refined expression of Japan’s centuries-old candle-making tradition. Each candle is meticulously handcrafted in Shiga Prefecture using 100% natural sumac HAZE (pronounced hah-zay) wax and a hand-rolled washi wick, resulting in a flame that is unmistakably warm, vibrant, and alive. These candles are created using the historic "Tegake" method - a technique practiced by only a handful of artisans in Japan - where wax is patiently applied layer by layer, dried, and shaped entirely by hand. The result is a candle that is not merely an object of use, but an artifact of skill, heritage, and intention.

With their smooth matte-white surface, sculptural taper, and serene brightness, these candles bring a sense of calm presence to any space. Whether used for tea ceremonies, meditation, quiet evenings, or thoughtful décor, they offer a uniquely Japanese experience of light: steady, elegant, and deeply atmospheric.

Key Benefits:

  • All-natural and sustainable: Made entirely from plant-based materials, with no synthetic wax or additives.
  • Clean, stable burn: Because of the natural sumac wax and traditional wick structure, these candles produce very little soot or drips — and they burn with a pleasing, stable flame.
  • Large, warm flame: The hollow washi-wick allows for a bigger, gentle flame compared to many Western-style candles.
  • Handcrafted artistry: Each candle is made by a master artisan using a Tegake technique — applying wax manually in layers, then drying, and repeating many times.
  • Eco-conscious design: Produced by a century-old traditional studio using sustainable

About Daiyo Candle Co:

Daiyo was established in the Takashima county of Shiga Prefecture in 1914. The artisanship has been passed down across four generations, polished and refined as time passes. Shiga prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, and an abundance of natural resources. Consequently, Shiga has accumulated a wealth of knowledge on the coexistence of man and nature. Daiyo’s Japanese candles are 100% made from natural plant wax. Their principles of making candles from the blessings of nature have remained unchanged since establishment more than a century ago.

In prayer, in conversation, in self reflection, the candle subtly changes its expression in response, in feather like gentleness and ethereal warmth. The flame emanates an emotion not possible with electrical lights in our daily lives. “From Monologue to dialogue” is a principle theme at Daiyo, as they constantly contemplate the innate powers of the light of a candle flame, and how human relations are derived and created from it. They will continue making candles of the highest quality in order to pass down the closely-knit relationship between flame and humans that they have weaved since generations ago.

What sets Daiyo apart is its Tegake method: master artisans apply molten wax by hand, layer by layer, around the wick. There are reportedly fewer than ten master candle-makers in Japan who still use this hand-rolling technique. The result is a candle that not only burns beautifully but reflects a deep respect for nature, tradition, and sustainable craftsmanship.

Care Instructions:

  • Lighting: For best results, light the candle horizontally for the first few moments, then place upright in a non-flammable holder.
  • Extinguishing: Avoid blowing out hard—use a gentle breath, or ideally a snuffer, to prevent wax splatter and soot.
  • Wick maintenance: If the wick grows long or curled, trim it down (to around 1 cm) using tweezers or a wick trimmer to maintain a clean burn.
  • Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place. Sumac wax is sensitive to heat and humidity, which can soften the candle.
  • Residue notes: Over time, you might notice a fine white “bloom” or powder on the wax surface — this is a normal characteristic of sumac wax, not a defect.
Dimensions: 4 x Candles - 12mm (diameter) at the top tapering to 9mm at the bottom, with a height of 125mm.

Burntime: c70 min per candle

Materials:
  • Wax: 100% natural HAZE (sumac) wax, harvested from sumac berries.
  • Wick: Hand-rolled core of washi paper, rush weed, and silk fiber — traditional Japanese construction.
Please note the candles are scentless *
