The 100-tine bamboo chasen represents the definitive tool for authentic matcha preparation, with origins dating back millennia in Japanese tea ceremony traditions. This precision instrument is essential for achieving proper matcha consistency.
To use effectively, add sifted matcha powder to your chawan (tea bowl) using your matcha chashaku (scoop), introduce water at the appropriate temperature, then execute firm, rapid and precise zigzag ("W" or "M" motions), whisking motions with your chasen to develop the characteristic microfoam that distinguishes properly prepared matcha.
Each chasen is individually hand-carved from a single bamboo piece, resulting in subtle structural variations that authenticate its artisanal production. The 100-tine configuration offers optimal aeration capability for superior froth development. Note that with regular use, the central tines naturally relax slightly—a normal characteristic that doesn't affect functionality.
Care instructions: Soak new whisk in hot water for 1-2 minutes before first use. After each use, rinse with water only (no soap), remove any residue, and air dry completely -preferably on a whisk holder. Store in a dry place to prevent mold formation.
